Both High Pressure Sodium and Metal Halide HID Lamps require large amounts of current to ignite them and this initial surge of power can be nearly double the load needed once the lamp is fully running.
Many growers use a 24 hour timer to switch on their lamps and control the day length in the grow room. However, almost all 24 hour timers are not designed or built to take the loads needed when an HID lamp ignites and will fail unless protected by a suitable relay or contactor. The inductive load that would otherwise be drawn through the timer will eventually result in the contacts within the timer becoming fused. When this happens your lights will remain off or on regardless of the time set on the timer. Your crop and safety is now in peril!
