With a Y-piece, you can connect 2 drain hoses to the same drain at the same time. This is useful when your washing machine and dryer are next to or on top of each other and you only have one drain. You press the gray plastic drain set on your drain and make sure you have room for 2 drain hoses. You can use the wide opening of the Y-piece for the drain hose of your washing machine.
